The Tarot According To The I Ching

In 2019, I asked the I Ching how I could better understand every Tarot card. One by one.

What follows are the cards of the Dali Tarot deck, the answers I was provided with, and the Tarot card meanings informed by the years (and tens of thousands of readings worth) of experience with the I Ching.

Hopefully this project gives you a different perspective on both the I Ching, and the Tarot (and maybe introduces you to the former if you've never come across it). I personally use these I Ching meanings when working with the Tarot.

Coins

Ace of Coins Meaning

Reading: Hexagram 49.3 > 17

There may be some superficial improvements, but you should do more following than taking initiative. Lower the intensity *and* your expectations. And wait until you have multiple confirmations before you *feel* any decisiveness.

-

Two of Coins Meaning

Dali Two of Coins

Reading: Hexagram 20.6 > 8

In looking *outside* of yourself, figure out if you're moving forward or not. Don't let the "other" in the situation get one over on you if it's not the right fit. You may end up just assessing things, but could still be moved beyond what *currently* stands in front of you.

-

Three of Coins Meaning

Reading: Hexagram 44.5.6 > 32

Transitional Reading: Hexagrams 44.5 > 50.6 > 32

There's a 'staying the course', so allow any 'fruits' to develop themselves naturally. Something may be a little too extreme, so do some second-thinking before you decide to put all of the chips on the table. Ultimately, what's cooking could leave you with a bit of a paradigm shift.

-

Four of Coins Meaning

Dali Four of Coins

Reading: Hexagram 14.2.3.6 > 51

Transitional Reading: Hexagrams 14.2 > 30.3 > 21.6 > 51

Plan on being caught off-guard, but follow that with caution and selflessness as you potentially make some forward movement. A big sacrifice might be in order, and you should accept the reality instead of clinging to what isn't. You might have some divine forces on your side, so just follow the rules, even if you're not getting the message at the moment.

-

Five of Coins Meaning

Dali Five of Coins

Reading: Hexagram 48.5 > 46

A treasure chest of sorts might be within reach. As you push ahead, though, try to maintain some semblance of composure. A gain might also bring with it a little loss.

-

Six of Coins Meaning

Dali Six of Coins

Reading: Hexagram 5.2.5 > 36

Transitional Reading: Hexagrams 5.2 > 63.5 > 36

Expect some censorship as you delay, speculate, and hope. There may be a less mature option available to you, but don't plan on any decisive moments. For now, be sincere in anything you offer, even if it doesn't amount to "the world."

-

Seven of Coins Meaning

Dali Seven of Coins

Reading: Hexagram 16.1.3.4 > 36

Transitional Reading: Hexagrams 16.1 > 51.3 > 55.4 > 36

There's some suppression here, so be careful instead of confident as you put in any prep-work. Figure out what *is* and *isn't* right for you, and think-fast as you respond to any surprises. In your search for a direction, a negative aspect might actually be a potential benefactor.

-

Eight of Coins Meaning

Dali Eight of Coins

Reading: Hexagram 10.4.5 > 41

Transitional Reading: Hexagrams 10.4 > 61.5 > 41

Something is being given up. If you're in a risky space, you'll do well to speak up, and seek assistance. You may need to stick to your guns, but don't aim too high when there's risks 'up there' that could make the balloon pop. If you really think you *know* something is going to be let go, know that it's *still* dependent on another party.

-

Nine of Coins Meaning

Dali Nine of Coins

Reading: Hexagram 19.3.5 > 5

Transitional Reading: Hexagrams 19.3 > 11.5 > 5

There's a need for some patience, because you're gonna have some waiting. Don't just sit there indulging in things you *think* are true, and expect to get a little insight to go along with any restrictions. You have to make an investment for the future, and it might not bring the *immediate* rewards you're hoping for.

-

Ten of Coins Meaning

Dali Ten of Coins

Reading: Hexagram 37.2.5.6 > 11

Transitional Reading: Hexagrams 37.2 > 9.5 > 26.6 > 11

There's a higher purpose flowing, so start deciding what's a 'go' and what isn't. Something attractive could impact another party if you reach for it, but there's likely going to be more incompletion, and 'uncomfortable' than any culminations. If you're stuck separating yourself, take comfort in knowing the sacrifice may have come from 'above'.

-

Page of Coins Meaning

Dali Page of Coins

Reading: Hexagram 1.1.2.3 > 12

Transitional Reading: Hexagrams 1.1 > 44.2 > 33.3 > 12

You're letting a little go, so just accept it when you *know* it's time to part ways with an overwhelming possibility. Plan for stormy days and leaky boats, and un-involve yourself when the time calls for hands not being on-deck. And even if you're stressed and busy, try to manage those relationships that may involve some imbalanced power.

-

Knight of Coins Meaning

Dali Knight of Coins

Reading: Hexagram 36.2.5 > 5

Transitional Reading: Hexagrams 36.2 > 11.5 > 5

Plan on some wait times, but there could be some help available waiting for you to take it. Put a cloak on the motives, especially if you're deciding between option A, or option B. And know that to see the returns you're hoping for, you may have to make an investment while investing in some patience.

-

Queen of Coins Meaning

Dali Queen of Coins

Reading: Hexagram 40 Unchanging (40 uc)

A kitchen utensil in the road. Do you take all of you on to that path, or do you leave all you back there. Freedom is a choice.

-

King of Coins Meaning

Dali King of Coins

Reading: Hexagram 26.3 > 41

You may need to make a sacrifice, or at least a big investment. Commit to what needs to be done, put in work, and use some wisdom, even if it's not originating from your own head. With some discipline and a little restraint, getting to the destination can actually be doable.

-

Cups

Ace of Cups Meaning

Dali Ace of Cups

Reading: Hexagram 15.6 > 52

Don't just sit there if something (or someone) valuable is in front of you. But also: don't get to point Z before you even saw point C. Expect some contemplation, and potentially some isolation as you get everything sorted out, though.

-

Two of Cups Meaning

Dali Two of Cups

Reading: Hexagram 56.2.5 > 44

Transitional Reading: Hexagrams 56.2 > 50.5 > 44

*This* isn't really tameable, so get some outside assistance as you contemplate all of those (many) forks in the road. You may want to chase the tail of something, but pulling back, and keeping your hands off of *something* might be on the to-do list. What glitters may actually be gold, so be in service to something that could actually be holier than the 'thou' in the mirror.

-

Three of Cups Meaning

Dali Three of Cups

Reading: Hexagram 53 Unchanging (53 uc)

Don't expect everything to happen all at once. A little at a time might be the most sustainable pace with all of 'this', and you may not have any say in the pace of development anyway. Step-by-step will at least keep your face from ending up in front of your feet, though.

-

Four of Cups Meaning

Dali Four of Cups

Reading: Hexagram 5.4.6 > 1

Transitional Reading: Hexagrams 5.4 > 43.6 > 1

There's a state of potential, but your state may not be all that sustainable. If there's something overwhelming draining you, don't just let your power get pulled out of you: move. And if any unexpected visitors, or messages pop up: *speak up*, or the closed mouth won't be doing any chewing.

-

Five of Cups Meaning

Dali Five of Cups

Reading: Hexagram 40.5.6 > 6

Transitional Reading: Hexagrams 40.5 > 47.6 > 6

Plan on some problems and a potential crossroads to be put in front of you here. If there's any distrust with other parties, lean into the limited freedoms that you *do* have in the situation. And as you move on with a little regret, take the resolution that you *can* receive, even if that finish is only impermanent.

-

Six of Cups Meaning

Dali Six of Cups

Reading: Hexagram 9.1.3.5.6 > 7

Transitional Reading: Hexagrams 9.1 > 57.3 > 59.5 > 4.6 > 7

In the face of a mission, do some tweaking, and you'll end up back on the track you're supposed to plant your feet on. A "truth" might create some tension, but try to avoid going overboard in digging into it, because "satisfying resolution" isn't exactly in the plans. Let the fog clear up on its own, and appreciate what you already *do* have, as you avoid engaging in any potentially damaging give-and-takes.

-

Seven of Cups Meaning

Dali Seven of Cups

Reading: Hexagram 59.3.4.6 > 28

Transitional Reading: Hexagrams 59.3 > 57.4 > 44.6 > 28

The breaking point is *just* about there, so be a little selfless, and give a bit, even if your heart isn't all the way in it. Think about what *is* and *isn't* capable of sustaining you, and if the times call for giving up on the sunk costs, without regret, so be it. Let bad blood bleed out, and know that using all your 'might' might led to some "I shouldn't have done that's."

-

Eight of Cups Meaning

Dali Eight of Cups

Reading: Hexagram 17.2.3 > 43

Transitional Reading: Hexagrams 17.2 > 58.3 > 43

It's time for choice, or decision, but don't let your immature, prize-imagining-self get the best of you. An opportunity might be in front of your face, and taking it may involve picking the path of the "grown." But in the middle of any movement, the reality may not be meeting those expectations you held up so high.

-

Nine of Cups Meaning

Dali Nine of Cups

Reading: Hexagram 31.2 > 28

Are you seeing cracks somewhere in *all of this*? If a spark is drawing you to the light, try to put to use any helping hands that can guide you through the current "too much" tension. But you *should* make a big move in a new direction, because that "much" likely can't be sustained.

-

Ten of Cups Meaning

Dali Ten of Cups

Reading: Hexagram 36 Unchanging (36 uc)

Things may be, or may be *getting* a little suppressed. Don't expect an abundance of communication to be going back and forth between the parties present. And if there's any trust, just know that it may have its limits.

-

Page of Cups Meaning

Dali Page of Cups

Reading: Hexagram 39 Unchanging (39 uc)

What stands in front of you may look a little too big to scale as things currently stand. But there may be some assistance if you look, or reach for it. For whatever the obstacle is, seek out solutions, or any "others" that could assist.

-

Knight of Cups Meaning

Dali Knight of Cups

Reading: Hexagram 48.5 > 46

There's some pushing *towards* something, but even rewards have two sides. If any resources appear to be available, you just might be able to get them. But there's likely going to have to be something given up in the exchange.

-

Queen of Cups Meaning

Dali Queen of Cups

Reading: Hexagram 61 Unchanging (61 uc)

You may have a hunch, but there's likely no one around you saying "correct." Know that follow-through isn't optional if you want to see anything materialize here. But you might need to think about what's "best for the whole" and give a little *something* up.

-

King of Cups Meaning

Dali King of Cups

Reading: Hexagram 60.1.2.3 > 39

Transitional Reading: Hexagrams 60.1 > 29.2 > 8.3 > 39

A roadblock here may involve your unopened front door that'll only let light in if you decide to do so. Sort through the confusion if you're considering an opportunity to pursue, and only try for small achievements. If all of this involves associating with a party that isn't quite "right" for you, it's up to you to choose restrictions, or the excess that could come with regrets.

-

Swords

-

Ace of Swords Meaning

Dali Ace of Swords

Reading: Hexagram 59.3.4.6 > 28

Transitional Reading: Hexagrams 59.3 > 57.4 > 44.6 > 28

It's time to make a move, but try to think selflessly if that move involves any exchanges with others. In the course of *this*, you may end up beyond your current focus, so know when to say "enough," instead of putting more into a pursuit. And any tense emotions present might be in the process of dispersing, but before you get too heavy-handed, put some hesitation between you and the potential embarrassment on the other side of the possible action.

-

Two of Swords Meaning

Dali Two of Swords

Reading: Hexagram 59.1.6 > 60

Transitional Reading: Hexagrams 59.1 > 61.6 > 60

If there's limitations, there's a need to recognize when they're not likely to be sustainable. You could have the ability to take big action to make change happen, so figure out what *is* working well, and do more of that. And it's probably a good idea to let a transfusion take place if there's bad blood in the situation, but don't expect words, hopes, and dreams to do the legwork to make something actually unfold.

-

Three of Swords Meaning

Dali Three of Swords

Reading: Hexagram 62.2 > 32

Be on your toes, and on your P's and Q's. The circumstances you bump into might not be the circumstances you thought you would. At that point, it's all about how you respond to it.

-

Four of Swords Meaning

Dali Four of Swords

Reading: Hexagram 9.2.6 > 63

Transitional Reading: Hexagrams 9.2 > 37.6 > 63

With a completion, you're being put back on the right path *for you*, even if the transition feels like a loss. Count the current blessings you possess, and scale down your aspirations, because you'll probably do more waiting and delaying than accomplishing. Be tactful with others, and accept your "stuck" position, because there may be a need to eventually isolate.

-

Five of Swords Meaning

Dali Five of Swords

Reading: Hexagram 49 Unchanging (49 uc)

Something's changing, but what problem might be posed by this new difference? It's probably better to be on your toes than on your heels. And make sure you have the facts in front of you before you get ahead of yourself.

-

Six of Swords Meaning

Dali Six of Swords

Reading: Hexagram 3.5 > 24

You're likely to be coming back to something rather than advancing to new lands here. But with any returns, don't go too far with it all. If you're trying to make sense of things, collect your gain, but recognize the stop sign when it pops up.

-

Seven of Swords Meaning

Dali Seven of Swords

Reading: Hexagram 8.4.5 > 16

Transitional Reading: Hexagrams 8.4 > 45.5 > 16

It's about prep-work, and what you want to make concrete may not be the right fit for *you*. If you have "guns" in the situation, stick to them, and allow any other parties, or elements, to use the door however they see fit. And without an excess of trust in the situation, put in the effort to make some deposits that could potentially help to build that up.

-

Eight of Swords Meaning

Dali Eight of Swords

Reading: Hexagram 57.2.5 > 52

Transitional Reading: Hexagrams 57.2 > 53.5 > 52

Stay to yourself, and stay a little still as you use information and some feedback to shore up any blindspots. Things may start on the rocks, but time has a way of smoothing things over. There could be some meaningful little developments, but know when to give a little if *this* isn't gonna get to the finish line.

-

Nine of Swords Meaning

Dali Nine of Swords

Reading: Hexagram 35.1 > 21

A lot of thinking, considering, and deliberating may be taking place. If you're getting anywhere, don't expect the roads to allow you to rest while you make moves. And you may have a little anxiety and uncertainty riding shotgun.

-

Ten of Swords Meaning

Dali Ten of Swords

Reading: Hexagram 57.3 > 59

Poking, prodding, digging. You may be trying to reach whatever the "bottom" is, but the answer might be seen by taking a step back. A little withdrawal may actually be the higher purpose you didn't know you were looking for.

-

Page of Swords Meaning

Dali Page of Swords

Reading: Hexagram 12.1.2 > 10

Transitional Reading: Hexagrams 12.1 > 25.2 > 10

You could be tip-toeing around a tiger, so maybe don't pursue a reward, despite how much it shines. It's up to you whether you take the noble path, or the one that most people would take, so choose wisely. And in your best interest, don't spend your time calculating rewards that aren't even planted seeds.

-

Knight of Swords Meaning

Dali Knight of Swords

Reading: Hexagram 52.4.6 > 62

Transitional Reading: Hexagrams 52.4 > 56.6 > 62

Be heedful and conscientious as you keep a little movement and a little security aligned. Sitting still might be the "right" thing to do when it comes to this. And that stilling may culminate in a bridge's ashes, or a door being locked.

-

Queen of Swords Meaning

Dali Queen of Swords

Reading: Hexagram 14 Unchanging (14 uc)

There may be resources, or the potential for gains, but having a lot of something isn't all that matters. Preventing wrong turns, and encouraging the right destinations might matter a little more. If it's about acquiring more, though, you just might end up deciding to decline the opportunity.

-

King of Swords Meaning

Dali King of Swords

Reading: Hexagram 25.4 > 42

Figure out what's working and what isn't, and do more of the former. You may be standing in the midst of a transitional state, so balance handling the uncertainty with having a pure heart. Know that you can trust something now, but if forever starts feeling like "fire," be sure to make a move.

-

Batons

-

Ace of Batons Meaning

Dali Ace of Batons

Reading: Hexagram 11.6 > 26

It may be only a brief window where some clarity is being delivered to you, or by you. Think a surrender of some sort more than some superficial gains. And think a picture that may be a bit bigger than what your eyes are currently fixating on.

-

Two of Batons Meaning

Dali Two of Batons

Reading: Hexagram 25.1.3.4 > 53

Transitional Reading: Hexagrams 25.1 > 12.3 > 33.4 > 53

With a little-at-a-time movement, let yourself let go of the lesser, and pursue a more difficult path. A transition may benefit one party more than another, and if a little shame comes along with it, let yourself feel it. You can stay true to this if it doesn't escalate, just know that one side is going to come out better than the other after any retreats.

-

Three of Batons Meaning

Dali Three of Batons

Reading: Hexagram 43.5 > 34

Use your voice, but also, make sure there's more good than bad going on. If you're stuck, it'll probably go a bit worse if you don't also stick to the rules on top of it. Keep the eyes open, though, and make a choice that might be more of a compromise in the larger picture.

-

Four of Batons Meaning

Dali Four of Batons

Reading: Hexagram 2.1.3.5 > 63

Transitional Reading: Hexagrams 2.1 > 24.3 > 36.5 > 63

With something coming to a completion, expect the current course of things to continue the way it currently appears. As you go back and forth, there may not be real rewards, but there's likely a meaningful completion here. Act instead of feeling anxious, and stay subdued as you go back and forth between a couple different options.

-

Five of Batons Meaning

Dali Five of Batons

Reading: Hexagram 26.2 > 22

With anything sparkly, and surface-level, only expect small accomplishments, and bite-sized rewards. And if past (or outside experience) is involved, plan on seeing some restraints. Don't expect it all to be "simple," though.

-

Six of Batons Meaning

Dali Six of Batons

Reading: Hexagram 59.1.5.6 > 19

Transitional Reading: Hexagrams 59.1 > 61.5 > 41.6 > 19

You may have some assumptions as you consider putting to use some assistance (that may be available). Things may get a bit more clear over time, but what you "feel" is true may depend on another party. Let any interpersonal tension lessen, but don't plan on this being a "forever home."

-

Seven of Batons Meaning

Dali Seven of Batons

Reading: Hexagram 26.6 > 11

If you "possess" something, you may have to give it up. If the clouds part and force you to make a sacrifice, you'll at least know it came from outside of yourself. Maybe you can at least take comfort in knowing that you didn't have the control here.

-

Eight of Batons Meaning

Dali Eight of Batons

Reading: Hexagram 2 Unchanging (2 uc)

What's the right "flag" to pledge allegiance to? Be sure to put some thought into whether *this* is the right crowd to crowd around. Regardless, there's bound to be a little confusion involved in all of this.

-

Nine of Batons Meaning

Dali Nine of Batons

Reading: Hexagram 1.1 > 44

What brick wall is in front of you that's got you contemplating a surrender? If you're not seeing this as a time you might want to call it quits, you may want to rethink that. Knowing something isn't likely to pan out could save you from getting started on a future loss.

-

Ten of Batons Meaning

Dali Ten of Batons

Reading: Hexagram 23.1.3 > 22

Transitional Reading: Hexagrams 23.1 > 27.3 > 22

There may be a bit of superficiality, but consider relinquishing something, especially if you soon may not have a say in the matter. Sticking to your principles here may have more longevity than stubbornly hanging on. Ultimately, decide what is (and isn't) proper, despite how attractive something is.

-

Page of Batons Meaning

Dali Page of Batons

Reading: Hexagram 39.2.3.5.6 > 4

Transitional Reading: Hexagrams 39.2 > 48.3 > 29.5 > 7.6 > 4

Plan on some cluelessness that gives more than just you a little trouble. In an in-between state it may be a little hard to use words to make success, but expect some "allies" to arrive to ensure things don't get worse. *This* may not be ideal, but stick with it, and know what options *not* to enlist.

-

Knight of Batons Meaning

Dali Knight of Batons

Reading: Hexagram 11.4.6 > 14

Transitional Reading: Hexagrams 11.4 > 34.6 > 14

-

Queen of Batons Meaning

Dali Queen of Batons

Reading: Hexagram 32 Unchanging (32 uc)

-

King of Batons Meaning

-

The Major Arcanum

-

0 - The Fool Meaning

Dali The Fool

Reading: Hexagram 39.1 > 63

-

1 - The Magician Meaning

Dali The Magician

Reading: Hexagram 13.2 > 1

-

2 - The Popess Meaning

Dali The Popess

Reading: Hexagram 44.2 > 33

-

3 - The Empress Meaning

Dali The Empress

Reading: Hexagram 48.6 > 57

-

4 - The Emperor Meaning

Dali The Emperor

Reading: Hexagram 18.1.5.6 > 5

Transitional Reading: Hexagrams 18.1 > 26.5 > 9.6 > 5

-

5 - The Pope Meaning

Dali The Pope

Reading: Hexagram 15 Unchanging (15 uc)

-

6 - The Lovers Meaning

Dali The Lovers

Reading: Hexagram 64.2.3 > 56

Transitional Reading: Hexagrams 64.2 > 35.3 > 56

-

7 - The Chariot Meaning

-

8 - Justice Meaning

Dali Justice

Transitional Reading: Hexagrams 31.1 > 49.3 > 17.4 > 3.5 > 24

With any pulls, expect an unexpected change, and don't let your worst impulses call the shots while it all goes down. And at the end of the day, be cautious following outside wisdom, because even with a rewarding return, you're not seeing it all.

-

-

11 - Force/Strength Meaning

Dali Force/Strength

Reading: Hexagram 52.5 > 53

-

12 - The Hanged Man Meaning

Dali The Hanged Man

Reading: Hexagram 61.3 > 9
